Your YEL income will be increased in 2022 using a wage coefficient

The amount of YEL confirmed income will be increased using a wage coefficient on 1 January 2022. By law, this index increase is applied to YEL confirmed income every year on the first of January. On 21 October 2021, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health confirmed that the wage coefficient for 2022 is 1.501.

In practice, the wage coefficient increase means that if your YEL confirmed income in 2021 was, for example, EUR 30,000, with the increase it will be EUR 30,737 as of 1 January 2022.

The index increase keeps an entrepreneur’s earned income in line with the general payroll and price development. In the wage coefficient, the proportion of the change in salaries is 80 per cent. The proportion of the change in prices is 20 per cent.

Unemployment security for the self-employed in 2022

In order to qualify for unemployment coverage as of 1 January 2022, your YEL income must be at least EUR 13,573. When your income exceeds this so-called unemployment coverage limit, you may qualify for Kela’s basic unemployment allowance and you can join the Entrepreneur Fund.

NOTE! If your income in 2021 was exactly at the unemployment security limit, i.e. EUR 13,247, the wage coefficient increase that takes place on 1 January 2022 will not be sufficient to raise your income to the limit of EUR 13,573 in 2022. The reason for this is the rounding rule for unemployment security. If necessary, apply for a change to your confirmed YEL income in the Varma Online Service or by phone at 010 192 100. There must be a justified reason for changing the income. You should also inform the Entrepreneur Fund of your confirmed YEL income amount, if you are a member.
