Ten office properties owned by Varma have been granted BREEAM In-Use environmental certification. All of the certified properties are located in Helsinki.
BREEAM* is an environmental rating system for buildings and building projects to assess the sustainability of buildings using harmonised methods. The rating system covers areas such as energy efficiency systems, waste sorting and recycling opportunities and location, i.e. whether the building is situated along good public transit routes and how cycling is encouraged in the space solutions, for example.
“We see certification as an excellent method for developing our real estate in a more environmentally friendly direction,” says Ilkka Tomperi, investment director in charge of Varma’s real estate operations.
Varma’s climate policy states that the company’s most important buildings will be certified primarily according to the BREEAM environmental rating system by 2025. The goal is to achieve a minimum rating of “Good” or “Very Good”.
“If one of our properties fails to achieve the classification we are targeting, we know that we need to make improvements. The reassessment carried out in three years’ time will give us an opportunity to improve the rating,” Tomperi explains.
Two of Varma’s properties were already certified in spring 2016. Now the certification has been granted to the following properties, one of which is the company’s head office building in Salmisaari.
Fredrikinkatu 42, Helsinki (Good)
John Stenbergin ranta 2, Helsinki (Good)
Lapinlahdenkatu 1 A-B, Helsinki (Good)
Lapinlahdenkatu 1 C, Helsinki (Very Good)
