Varma joins project to integrate asylum seekers in business life
Varma is taking part in an integration programme that aims to open the door to Finnish business and working life for asylum seekers.
The Business Lead 2016 integration programme offers educated asylum seekers the opportunity to learn about Finnish and European work culture, for instance business ethics, legal systems, sales, marketing and entrepreneurship. The training programme also includes an internship in a Finnish company.
Varma is both sponsoring the integration programme and offering a two-month internship to one asylum seeker.
“It is important to find and support ways of lowering the threshold for asylum seekers in Finland to enter Finnish working life. This is corporate social responsibility at its best. It benefits not only the asylum seeker, but also us as a company, as it allows us to include an international perspective and knowledge in our ranks,” says Katri Viippola, Varma’s Senior Vice-President of HR, Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility.
“At the same time, I see this as an excellent way to increase diversity at Varma,” says Viippola.
Asylum seekers suited to the programme are being recruited by the Finnish Red Cross, StartUp Refugees and The Finnish Immigration Service. Entry to the programme requires English language skills and the right to work according to the Finnish Immigration Service.
The integration programme is co-ordinated by Hanken & SSE Executive Education.
