YEL contributions are due, and money is tight – what are your options? Payment extension, payment flexibility and other solutions

Economic challenges also show up in the wallets of entrepreneurs. Making YEL payments on time is difficult for many. There can be many reasons behind this, but there are usually solutions as well. We have compiled a range of options to help you find the one best suited to you and your company.

Options for solving payment challenges

  1. Payment extension

Apply for an extended term of payment before the due date. Creating a payment plan is free of charge, but it is advisable to act early to avoid the EUR 40 payment reminder. For payments made after the due date, only late interest is charged.

Apply for an extended term of payment in the Varma Online Service:
Log in > YEL insurance > Invoices > Apply for an extended term of payment for your invoices

2. Change in the due months for contributions

Even if your work remains the same, your clients’ payment behaviour may have changed. When that happens, paying YEL contributions may be difficult. One option is to change the payment months such that your YEL contributions fall due every second or third month, for example.

Change the months when your payments are due in the Varma Online Service:
Log in > YEL insurance > Insurance information > YEL income and YEL payment instalments > Change contribution instalments

3. A change in your YEL income

If there has been a significant, permanent change in your work, you can apply for a change in your YEL income in the Varma Online Service.

In the application, enter your business sector and your company’s net revenue for the last three months. You will receive a recommendation on the amount of your YEL income based on that. If your view of the current level of your YEL income does not match the recommended YEL income or its range, provide further clarification on the factors affecting the value of your work input. If necessary, we will ask you for more information before we make a decision.

A good tip is to first use the income calculator to see whether your YEL income could be lowered. You can find the calculator for estimating the correct level of YEL income on our website. Enter your business sector and your company’s annual net revenue into the calculator. You will receive a recommendation for the amount of your YEL income and its range, and you can assess whether it would be possible to lower the amount of your YEL income.

4. Flexibility in YEL contributions

You can apply for a downward adjustment of your YEL contribution if you have no outstanding payments, you do not receive the discount for new entrepreneurs and your YEL insurance with Varma has been valid for this entire calendar year. The payment flexibility retroactively reduces the entire year’s YEL contributions by 10–20 percent, depending on your choice, so that the contributions for the rest of the year will already be partially paid. After the payment flexibility, your YEL income must be at least the minimum YEL amount.  You can reduce your YEL contributions for a maximum of three years within seven consecutive calendar years.
