With our Sustainability Programme extending to 2030, we guide and develop Varma’s sustainability work. We are committed to safeguarding our customers’ pension, investing responsibly, promoting sustainable work ability, and being a good workplace for our employees.

Our Sustainability Programme is based on the environmental and social impacts we have identified, together with our stakeholders, as material, as well as on the risks and opportunities in our value chain. 

In line with our strategy, we focus on actions that truly make a difference and continue high-quality work in sustainability.

The Sustainability Programme consists of four parts: Safeguarding your pension, Preparing for the future by investing responsibly, Promoting sustainable work ability and A good workplace for our employees.

We have defined goals and measures for the various parts of the Sustainability Programme, as well as indicators for measuring their implementation. We report on the progress of the Sustainability Programme and the achievement of its goals in our Sustainability Statement.  

 

Safeguarding your pension

We manage our customers' pension matters with efficiency and care. Our service is proactive and attentive to your individual needs. You receive reliable information to support your decisions.

We secure the accrual of your pension through statutory pension insurance. We pay you the pension you are entitled to – now and in the future. If your work ability weakens, we are here to support you.

We carry out our work ethically and transparently and expect the same from our supply chain. Our established principles guide our actions. Trust is the foundation of our customer relations.

Goals

Livelihood and work ability

When the customer’s situation in life changes, the customer’s livelihood is not interrupted.

  • Between 85 and 90 per cent of new pensioners are paid their pension in the month during which the right to receive the pension commenced.

We support access to work, returning to work and staying at work through vocational rehabilitation when work ability declines.

  • 85 per cent of those who have started a rehabilitation programme return to the labour market.

Customer Service

We ensure the accessibility of services. We develop multi-channel services and strengthen AI assistance to provide high-quality personal service in all service situations.

Ethical operations

We ensure that every Varma employee operates sustainably and ethically in their daily work in accordance with the defined policies, and that our suppliers are committed to our sustainability requirements.

  • Varma’s EcoVadis scores in the 80-90/100 point target range.

We safeguard the privacy of our customers and employees by ensuring that Varma’s data protection principles and information security policy are followed.

Preparing for the future by investing responsibly

We invest profitably and securely. Our investment decisions take into account the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and geopolitical instability, while also identifying new opportunities.

We leverage modern technology to assess the impact of global developments on our investments.

We promote responsible practices across our investment targets.

Our investments in domestic growth create new jobs and strengthen the economy.

Goals

Climate change and biodiversity

We aim to reduce the climate impact of our investments in line with the goals of the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative:

  • The short-term target is to increase the share of companies committed to the SBT initiative to 51 per cent by 2027. The target applies to the listed equities, corporate bonds and real estate funds in which Varma invests.
  • Setting long-term targets in line with the SBT initiative

We set portfolio-level targets for climate change adaptation.

We set portfolio-level targets for biodiversity.

Governance and sustainability

We promote good corporate governance and sustainability, especially in Finnish companies.

Properties

We reduce GHG emissions from properties and vehicles in accordance with our SBT commitment.

  • Reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 60 per cent from the 2021 levels by 2030.

We participate in energy efficiency agreements in the real estate sector and commit to at least the targets set in the agreement.

  • 10 per cent energy savings in 2026–2035 (interim target 6 per cent in 2030).

We maintain a good level of tenant satisfaction.

We keep construction sites safe.

Promoting sustainable work ability

Our aim is to ensure that as many people as possible can participate in working life. We support our corporate clients in preventing and managing work ability risks.

Our work ability management services are designed to benefit all our corporate clients. We place particular emphasis on supporting those whose employees face the highest risk of disability.

We turn data and professional insights into knowledge on work ability management, contributing to public discourse for the benefit of all.
