Payment of pension

Paid earnings-related pensions and rehabilitation allowance are always increased at the turn of the year with the earnings-related pension index. These benefits will increase next year by 0.88 %. You can use the calculator to estimate the amount of the 2026 benefit.

You can see the amount of the confirmed, index-increased pension or rehabilitation allowance as of 1 January 2026 in Varma Online Service or in the turn-of-the-year letter. 

The earnings-related pension index is used to adjust any earnings-related pensions to be paid that have started no later than on 1 December 2025. The earnings-related pension types to be increased are old-age pension, partial old-age pension, disability pension, partial disability pension, cash rehabilitation benefit, rehabilitation allowance, years-of-service pension and survivors’ pensions, that is: surviving spouse’s pension and orphan’s pension.

• In accordance with Finnish pension legislation, earnings-related pensions can only be paid once a month. The payment day cannot be moved to the preceding month because the right to receive a pension exists on a monthly basis.
• The exact time when the pension will be in your account on the payment date depends on the bank’s payment processes. Your bank can provide you with more information.
• If you receive two different pensions (e.g. old-age pension and survivor’s pension for a widowed person), the pensions will be shown as separate payments in your bank account.
• If you are on a pension, you can see the amount of pension to be paid on the Payments and certificates page of Varma Online Service.

• In our online service, you can change the bank account number into which we pay your pension. You can change your account number in Varma Online Service on the Bank account number and tax rate page.
• We send pension information to the banks several days before the pension payment date, so please notify us about changes in your bank account number no later than one week  before the pension payment date so that this can be taken into account in the pension payment.
• When a young person receiving a child survivor’s pension turns 18, the pension is paid to the person’s own account. The easiest way to report the account number is to log into our online service.

Log in to Varma Online Service

If you do not have online banking codes or a mobile certificate required for logging in, you can use the form below or a free-form letter to notify us of your new bank account number (IBAN). Sign the notification of a changed bank account. You can send the form to Varma via the “turvaposti” email encryption service. We cannot change your bank account number over the phone or via email, because the notification of a changed bank account must contain the pensioner’s signature.

If you live in Finland and move, we usually receive information about your new address in Finland directly from the Finnish population register authority. The address is updated within approximately two weeks.

If you live outside of Finland, we will not automatically receive information about changed addresses of pension recipients. For that reason, it is important that you notify our pension payments department if you live outside of Finland and your address changes. We must have your current address so that we can send you a residence report to be completed every year.

You can change your address in our online service if you have Finnish online banking codes or a mobile certificate. Alternatively, you can submit a change of address by letter or secure email.

Our pensioners receive an annual letter on Varma Online Service in January. In the annual letter, you can see

• the amount of pensions and withholding tax paid in the previous year
• the index-adjusted amount of pension and withholding tax for the current year
• pension payment dates.

We send our pensioners an SMS when the annual letter is available in Varma Online Service. New annual letters become visible to pensioners at the end of January.  Guardians and pensioners living abroad receive the annual letters by post.
