Rehabilitation

Is an illness affecting your ability to work? Have you been away from your job for a long time or repeatedly due to an illness? Or perhaps you are already collecting the cash rehabilitation benefit, i.e. fixed-term disability pension, and that is coming to an end? The purpose of vocational rehabilitation is to help an employee or a self-employed person remain in working life. Vocational rehabilitation also includes the possibility of switching to work that is better suited to your health if an illness makes it impossible for you to perform your usual tasks.

What is vocational rehabilitation?

The goal of vocational rehabilitation is to help you return to working life and to work that is suited to your health.

Vocational rehabilitation supports your possibilities to continue working when your work ability weakens, after or in spite of an illness, so that you can work right up until you reach your retirement age. It is important to think about what would be the best vocational rehabilitation plan for your situation.

Discuss with your employer and occupational health care whether vocational rehabilitation would be a suitable option for your situation. If you are not a customer of occupational health care, discuss the matter with your attending physician.

The rehabilitation programme that is proposed in the rehabilitation plan most often consists of a work trial involving your regular work tasks or other tasks. We can also support education or entrepreneurial activities, if necessary.

If you find it difficult to draw up a rehabilitation plan and you cannot return to your current or former workplace, contact Varma’s rehabilitation specialist. We can offer you the assistance of our rehabilitation partner, who will help you draw up a plan that suits your state of health.

You may receive a rehabilitation allowance for your period of vocational rehabilitation if you have been issued a positive decision concerning your right to receive vocational rehabilitation, you have submitted an approved rehabilitation plan, and you have begun a rehabilitation programme that is in line with the plan.

Medical treatment and rehabilitation is the responsibility of the occupational health care provider and the Social Insurance Institution Kela.
